Amy McCalla, DVM

Dr.McCalla

Dr. Amy McCalla brings a unique and distinguished background to Waterway Animal Hospital. Originally from Memphis, TN, she began her career with a summa cum laude degree in pre-med before spending 23 years primarily in research medicine and veterinary pathology. Her early work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital inspired her to pursue veterinary medicine, leading her to North Carolina State University, where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and completed a pathology residency.

Dr. McCalla further advanced her expertise by earning a PhD in comparative pathology from the National Cancer Institute (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. Her groundbreaking research in pediatric oncology contributed to a novel treatment approach for Ewing Sarcoma, a bone cancer in children.

Transitioning to clinical veterinary practice, Dr. McCalla discovered her passion for blending her extensive research and medical training to provide compassionate care to animals. She has practiced in multiple states, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to her role as a general practitioner.

Dr. McCalla finds immense joy in caring for animals and educating clients. Outside of work, she spends time with her three children and enjoys a lifelong hobby of collecting and researching antiques with her father.

She is thrilled to join the team at Waterway Animal Hospital and looks forward to serving the community while raising her youngest daughter, Adelyn, in the beautiful Little River community.
